Menopause in the Workplace: What You Need to Know (UK & USA)

Menopause in the Workplace: What You Need to Know (UK & USA)

Today, we’re talking about something that affects millions of women…

but still doesn’t get nearly enough honest conversation.

Menopause in the workplace.

Because let’s be real…

Trying to manage hot flushes, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, headaches, palpitations, heavy periods, low confidence — and a nervous system that feels constantly on edge — while also answering emails, sitting in meetings, managing teams or being on your feet all day…

It’s a lot.

And yet so many women are still expected to just quietly get on with it.

Why This Matters

This is not a niche issue.

In the UK alone, millions of women aged 45–60 are in employment, meaning a huge number are navigating work during the menopause transition.

And the impact is significant.

Many women:

  • Consider leaving their jobs

  • Lose confidence at work

  • Feel unsupported or misunderstood

This isn’t about being “a bit hormonal.”

This is about:

careers, confidence, financial security, wellbeing, and equality.

What Menopause Can Look Like at Work

Menopause doesn’t always look obvious.

Sometimes it’s visible:

hot flushes, fatigue, migraines, anxiety.

But often, it looks like:

Forgetting words mid-meeting.

Losing confidence.

Feeling overwhelmed by tasks you used to handle easily.

Struggling with noise, heat, uniforms or long shifts.

And when women don’t feel safe to talk about it?

They mask it.

Push through.

Stay silent.

Until one day… work feels impossible.

Workplace Rights in the UK

In the UK, menopause is not currently a standalone protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

However — and this is important — symptoms can still be protected under:

  • Sex discrimination

  • Age discrimination

  • Disability (in some cases)

Employers also have a duty of care around health and safety.

That includes things like:

  • Temperature and ventilation

  • Access to toilets

  • Drinking water

  • Rest areas

  • Suitable uniforms

So no — this is not something employers can just ignore.

They are expected to take reasonable, practical steps to support employees.

Public vs Private Sector (UK)

Both sectors must follow employment law.

But in the public sector, there is often an added responsibility through equality duties — meaning organisations may need to be more proactive in:

  • Policies

  • Training

  • Inclusive workplace practices

Workplace Rights in the USA

In the USA, menopause is not a specifically protected category under federal law.

But women may still be protected through:

  • Sex discrimination laws

  • Disability laws (if symptoms are severe)

Depending on the situation, employers may need to provide reasonable accommodations.

Coverage can vary depending on:

  • Employer size

  • State laws

  • Type of employment (private, state, or federal)

So if you’re in the U.S., it’s important to check:

your state law, workplace policy, and HR support.

What Support Can Look Like

Support doesn’t have to be dramatic.

Often, small changes make a huge difference.

This might include:

A desk fan or better ventilation

Access to cold drinking water

Flexible breaks

Hybrid or flexible working

Access to a quiet space

Adjustments to uniform or dress code

More frequent toilet access

Temporary workload adjustments

Supportive, informed managers

And often the biggest thing?

Feeling heard.

Feeling believed.

Feeling supported.

How to Ask for Help

If you’re struggling, here are some simple steps:

Keep a note of your symptoms and how they affect your work

Think about practical solutions before speaking to your employer

Check your workplace policies

Speak to HR, occupational health, or a union rep if available

This isn’t about proving anything.

It’s about advocating for yourself with clarity and confidence.

A Message to Employers

If you’re an employer reading this…

Supporting menopause is not a “nice to have.”

It’s:

Good for retention

Good for productivity

Good for morale

Good for equality

Women in midlife are often at the peak of their experience and leadership.

Losing them due to lack of support?

That’s not just unfair.

It’s bad business.

Making Work Feel Easier Day-to-Day

If you’re in this right now, a few things that may help:

Plan important tasks for when you feel most focused

Eat regular, protein-rich meals to support energy

Stay hydrated

Dress in layers where possible

Use breathing techniques to manage stress

Be mindful of caffeine and alcohol

Prioritise rest and recovery outside of work

A Little Reassurance

If work feels harder right now…

That does not mean you are failing.

It does not mean you are no longer capable.

And it absolutely does not mean you should suffer in silence.

You deserve support.

You deserve understanding.

And you deserve a workplace that recognises menopause for what it is:

A real health and equality issue — not a punchline.
